Torrance-Raum (Torrance Room), 2007

Soundinstallation

In a slightly darkened room you can hear a voice repeating the same sentence over and over: „ Was Du heute kannst besorgen, das verschiebe nicht auf morgen (engl.: „All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.“).“ Jörg Pleva, Jack Torrance`s (alias Jack Nicholson) german voice reads the sentence out of his book „All work and no play…“.

In late 1979, in the abandoned Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains, where he had withdrawn with his family, Jack Torrance wrote his book. That same winter, he died under tragic circumstances. Torrance was a master of repetition. Again and again, he inscribed the same words, consistently avoiding any attempt to go beyond his initial statement.

M+M came across Torrance´s manuscripts during their stay in the calm idyll of the Villa Massimo, Rome. 20 years after his death they were able to puplish the book „Was du heute kannst besorgen,…“.
