kurz vor fünf (shortly before five), beginning 2001

Filmlet photographs, Cibachrome on Alucobond, 238 x 125 cm

Each photograph in the series consists of 4,290 successive individual frames of film. Together, each series forms a barely 3-minute-long film of a lone individual who is observed in his environment. The films are staged onsite with a small team (actor, cameraman, lighting technician), edited in computer and mounted as images. If the image sequences can be followed in detail from an extreme close view, then they fuse with increased distance into largely abstract matrixes, determined by the dominant color scheme of the respective sets.

All the stories seen in these filmlet photographs take place on the same day and at the same hour: Shortly before five, Central European time. Here is a synchronized section of the lives of completely different individuals at the most diverse locales: Berlin, Bornholm, Montreal, Munich, Princeton, New York, Calcutta …

Between the single stories a web of random correlations is created, similar to the movies „Short Cuts“, „Magnolia“ or „Pulp Fiction“. The photoseries grows continuously through new stories, that interlink more and more.
